- Pugnacious POPEYE the Sailor Man is up to his biceps in
- controversy for appearing as Popeye the Quaker Man. The Society
- of Friends objected to his use in oatmeal ads, citing its
- pacifist principles. (OLIVE OYL was also criticized as being
- submissive.) After apologizing, Quaker Oats has ended the
- campaign, but Popeye comics remain in some boxes. If the
- cartoons are used again, the firm promises to be "sensitive to
- Friends' concerns." For now, let Popeye stick to spinach.
