  7.     Pugnacious POPEYE the Sailor Man is up to his biceps in
  8. controversy for appearing as Popeye the Quaker Man. The Society
  9. of Friends objected to his use in oatmeal ads, citing its
  10. pacifist principles. (OLIVE OYL was also criticized as being
  11. submissive.) After apologizing, Quaker Oats has ended the
  12. campaign, but Popeye comics remain in some boxes. If the
  13. cartoons are used again, the firm promises to be "sensitive to
  14. Friends' concerns." For now, let Popeye stick to spinach.
